RCE Barcelona

RCE Barcelona is located in the city of Barcelona, a compact Mediterranean city, flanked by two rivers and a mountain range and a population of 1.7 million. As well as its rich architectural, cultural, linguistic and artistic heritage Barcelona is home to a vibrant and engaged civil society, including environmental business associations, an emerging social innovation sector, a wealth of NGOs and social movements and world class Universities and Business Schools offering sustainability related programmes. The public sector has also traditionally been active in the field of environmental education and civic engagement and most recently social entrepreneurship.
 

CURRENT ACTIVITIES:
RCE Barcelona was one of the first RCEs to be created in 2007 and undertakes the following activities:

  • Creation of a network of universities, public sector organisations, environmental groups, social movements and cooperative businesses committed to education for sustainability
  • 21 Visions project to identify 21 local entrepreneurs and explore how they learnt
  • Create ongoing opportunities for collaborative work on ESD project
  • Editing of the magazine “Education and Sustainability” in Spanish and Catalan including think pieces, case studies, teaching resources, directories and other tools for educators
  • Distribution of the magazine to all secondary schools in Catalonia, libraries, resource centres
  • Online distribution of 11 monographic issues of the magazine free to download
  • Collaboration with RCE Skane to create and edit Education and Sustainability Sweden with 6 issues edited to date
  • Avalon Sustainability School, an intercultural learning experience offered to teenagers from around the world combining adventure, art and skills for sustainability

PARTNERS:
RCE Barcelona is coordinated by the non for profit cooperative Barcelonya and partners include the Technical University of Barcelona, the University of Girona, UNESCOCAT, Barcelona City Council, Regional Barcelona Government, Catalan Government department for Land and Sustainability, the Federation of Development NGOs, Engineers without Borders, Fundació Prevenció de Residus and the Network of World Committed Schools.
