Natural ecosystem as this programme covers responsible tourism in all aspects of the natural ecosystem
Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area :
Socioeconomic characteristics: The 2015 census of Malaysia reported a population of 2,636,000 in Sarawak, making it the fourth most populous state in Malaysia. Sarawak is inhibited by more than 40 sub-ethnic groups which consist predominantly of Dayak (43.8%), Malay (24.4%), Chinese (24.2%), Melanau (6.7%), Indian (0.3%) and others (0.3%) in 2014 as according to State Statistics.

Environmental characteristics: The total land area of Sarawak is nearly 124, 450 square kilometres, making up 37.5% of the total area of Malaysia. Sarawak has a tropical geography with an equatorial climate and experiences two monsoon seasons. Sarawak is also divided into 12 divisions whereby each is headed by an appointed resident.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
The sustainable tourism industry which has been in place since 2011 has become the prime concern of Sarawak. Sarawak is particularly well known for its many national parks and its ecotourism initiatives. In fact, the state is a home to majestic natural ecosystems as well as a diverse selection of flora and fauna. Nonetheless, it has become a major challenge to shift mindset for sustainable tourism development among the community and other stakeholders. Therefore, responsible tourism has become the main focus to revitalize Sarawak tourism industry as it can help to safeguard the beautiful natural resources in Sarawak and ensure protection and survival for many generations to come. As such, creating awareness on responsible tourism is one of the best practices for sustainable tourism so that Sarawak can become a better place for travelers to visit and live in.

Status:
Ongoing
Period:
July, 2020
Rationale:
Online learning is one of the effective ways to deliver education and create awareness to the intended participants especially during the pandemic of COVID-19. Therefore, to shift mindset for sustainable tourism development among the community and other stakeholders in Sarawak, it is vital to raise their awareness of Responsible Tourism via online learning platform. This Pandei Responsible Tourism programme serves as the platform that provides educational materials/activities which help the learners to understand the 5Rs (Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse and Repurpose) concept in the scope of Responsible Tourism. This programme is also in line with the declaration of "Sarawak Commitment to Responsible Tourism" as announced by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Sarawak and it acts as the support activities that enable Sarawak to achieve its goal in ensuring Sarawak's tourism industry remains relevant, viable and sustainable.
Objectives:
In the end of the course, the learners will be able to:
•Develop awareness on responsible tourism and the 5Rs concept (cognitive learning)
•Apply responsible tourism and the 5Rs concept in their life (socio-emotional and behavioural learning)
Activities and/or practices employed:
The online modules of Pandei Responsible Tourism include various interactive activities that have been imbedded into the platform. The learners could view numerous informative slides of the six Responsible Tourism modules, watch the videos, view pictures and they could also attempt quizzes (i.e true false, MCQ), open-ended question, and short discussion via the platform. In the end of the module, the learners could provide their reflection and tell the other learners on what they have learnt/understood about the modules. The activities in this programme are still ongoing and are expected to remain relevant following the declaration of Sarawak's commitment to Responsible Tourism.
Size of academic audience:
575 target audiences
Results:
Through this Pandei Responsible Tourism programme, a total of 575 learners have participated in the online learning module. As the programme is still ongoing, there would be definitely more participants that are expected to join this programme. In addition, approximately 205 participants have written on the module reflection section in which all of them mentioned that the programme is effective in enhancing their awareness of Responsible Tourism. Through this programme, they are now clear about the 5Rs (Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, and Repurpose) concept and its importance in the scope of Responsible Tourism. The participants also agreed that the module is very interactive and has provided good information in regards to Responsible Tourism (ie facts, best practices, issues and so on). Overall, the programme has achieved its objectives. It is hoped that more people would join this programme and increase their awareness on Responsible Tourism and make Sarawak a better place for travelers to visit and live in.
Lessons learned:
Success factor: This programme is the first online learning module developed for the Sarawak community which aims to increase awareness on Responsible Tourism in Borneo. Having the first-mover advantage, this programme serves as a benchmark to other institutions to come out with similar learning concepts due to increasing movement towards responsible tourism to achieve sustainable tourism development.

Challenges: Firstly, this programme is challenged by the condition of internet connectivity in Sarawak. For instance, due to poor internet connectivity in some rural areas in Sarawak, the community may not be able to join the course which is conducted via online platform. Secondly, it would be a difficult task for RCE Kuching to change the mindset of the community towards applying responsible tourism and the 5Rs concept in their routine life (behavioural change). The mindset change requires time among the community and therefore, it may take a longer time to see the change in behaviour among the community. Nonetheless, increasing awareness is always seen as the first step towards the future behavioural change.

Opportunities: Sharing educational resources and knowledge on responsible tourism is seen as the opportunities to widen the scope of our audience to national, regional and global levels. Not only that, further improvement towards the module by including the latest technology applications such as gamifications or integrated educational softwares could be introduced into the module.
Key messages:
Pandei Responsible Tourism Programme as one of the initiatives under RCE Kuching aims to develop awareness on responsible tourism and the 5Rs concept among the Sarawak community. In line with Sarawak's commitment to Responsible Tourism, the module is developed by members of RCE Kuching in collaboration with Sarawak Tourism Board, Sarawak State Library and also UCSI University.
