5. Project description
Provide a short description of the project including strategies, regional challenges, aims and specific project activities.:

The curriculum of Environmental Education (EE) effectively enhances the awareness levels of students by providing with information and knowledge regarding the environment and its associated problems. But mere awareness razing is not sufficient in order to ensure translation of awareness into action. Students need to be equipped with skills, attitudes, which are an outcome of activity based teaching methods. Hence in the previous phase of the project, activity based training module and resource kit was developed, tested and further refined based on the feedback of the pilot run. Training was provided to around 300 teachers from 60 schools in Thane, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

There is a need to assess how much of the training gets translated into the classroom in the various schools. This assessment will also throw light on the challenges teachers face in executing activity based teaching methods.

Along with the emphasis on strengthening activity based teaching method in the existing schools there is a need to simultaneously reach out to more schools in different regions. As the syllabus keeps changing, more schools would benefit from the current resource material that has been prepared based on the current syllabus.

The overarching objective of this initiative is to inculcate interest, experience and involvement in the environment amongst teachers and students through activity-based environment education (ABEE). Specific activities include:

- Impart ABEE training to teachers from the identified 50-55 schools across locations in Goa and Maharashtra.

- Develop/execute the necessary evaluating tools and strategies required for impact assessment of ABEE in current and previous schools (~100).

- Analyse and report findings of the impact assessment.

- Redesign the content of the resource kit in a book format for wider dissemination.
