Awareness raising in out-of school youth and informal settlements
2. Project Description:
This project aims to improve education and awareness of out-of-school youth concerning ESD-related issues. It will eventually design and implement with organizations an action plan to involve out-of-school youth in ESD activities and improve awareness of ESD-related issues in informal settlements. Furthermore, it will investigate how the policies of local authorities address issues of the unemployed youth. For the purpose of achieving this, contact should be made with organizations who work with out-of-school youth and in informal settlements such as NGOs, HIV organizations, women groups, religious groups, among others.

10. Project results :
r. Nkusi developed an ICT/modile learning programme which targets out-of-school youth. It is a collaboration with the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture. It concentrates on skills development. The project started with teaching mushroom production Usakos. At the moment a shortage of funds for this project is experienced. The first phase yielded promising results. Students were given affordable cell phone and learning material was developed by the Ministry of Youth. In total 21 cell phones were bought to start the project. The phones have 2GB memory cards and cost N$80 per phone. Students can access the learning material with their cell phones and assignments can also be submitted with the cell phones. The next training will focus on climate change, water management and finally entrepreneurship.
The Environmental Education Unit of the Min. of Youth in Erongo (Usakos) and also in other areas of the country focus on out-of school groups. Issues that are dealt with include: climate change, water conservation, bird watching, tree planting etc. The out-of –school youth meet once a week. The biggest challenge is a lack of motivation. In an attempt to solve this problem the Gobabeb Research and Education Centre was visited during 2011 to increase the motivation and awareness of the young people.
Another project is the mushroom e-learning for out of school youth. The biggest challenge in the education of out-of-school youth is provision of food, accommodation and transport. ICT e-learning can help solve this problem.
