Provide a short description of the project including strategies, regional challenges, aims and specific project activities.:

Introduction:

Yayasan FAQEH in collaboration with Centre of Quranic Research (CQR), UM has developed innovative teaching methods called QuraANIS which contains various methods of teaching and learning Quran for Special Needs such as Fakih Method, Tilawah Asyraaf Method, Tahfiz Akhyar Method and Penulis Wahyu Method. These methods have gained notable success with significant learning process as observed across the wide spectrum of disabilities. However, the methods have only been practiced manually (numbers, colours, cards, and papers). Given these student technological interests and ability in using tablets and smartphones, this project aims to computerise this method through an application development. Currently, there is no available mobile app/computer application catered for their special needs (simple interface yet suitably challenging tasks).

Aims:

1. To develop mobile apps following the special needs of the children for the learning the Quran.

2. To understand the interest, habits and behaviour of the special needs children in technological devices for future research collaboration.

3. To promote the awareness among community/parent to this special children’s ability and potential in reciting, memorizing and (in some cases) writing verses of Quran.

Knowledge transferred:

Researcher intends to computerise the present manual approach of the Tilawah Asyraaf method through a mobile apps development. Events will also being organize to observe how these children use tablets to learn their behaviour and habits.

Impact of project:

The project will benefit the Muslim special needs children in promoting the students interest and focus in gaining proper Quran identifying/memorising/reading/understanding in a meaningful manner according to their individual capabilities. The benefit is most pronounced with the use of technology as we understood that, to certain extent, these children are avid users of tablets and smartphones. At the moment their learning is only monitored and fully practised during the hours they spend at the FAQEH Academy. However, with the availability of the online tools, both parents and children can extend their usage and practise at home, increasing the likelihood of mastering Quran in shorter duration. In addition, this effort will open opportunities to produce Quran memorizer among the special children.
