Status:
Ongoing
Period:
January, 2017
Rationale:
The rationale is to create and offer high quality published materials pertaining to Sustainable Development and Education for Sustainable Development to be offered and utilized worldwide.

We hope to be the organizers of set of inter-RCE projects designed to create culturally-relevant materials in all the UN languages, in Hausa and in other languages on request.

If the RCE Community organizers are in agreement, we hope to offer electronic copies of the publications free of charge for users worldwide by uploading them to the RCE website.
Objectives:
° To create world-class SD and ESD publications in all the UN languages and in others on request.

° To make these materials available electronically to users worldwide.

° To create, publish and disseminate high quality materials in a cost-effective manner.

° To earn enough from the sale of hard copies so that Transformation Press will be self-sustaining.
Activities and/or practices employed:
° Needs Analysis of communities that require Education for Sustainable Development materials. While scientific materials relating to sustainable development can be published by Transformation Press at the expert level, we aim to prioritize the publication and dissemination of teaching materials designed to provide knowledge, skills, values and attitudes, which we hope will translate into behaviors that will enhance sustainable development in learners around the world.

° Research and Literature Review in the topical areas to be addressed by each publication

° In-depth analysis and mining of existing high-quality ESD materials with the purpose of a) providing links to them and b) of strengthening SD instructional materials through our publications and making them available worldwide.
° Drafting, re-drafting, refereeing, critiquing, editing and re-editing
° Transformation Press is committed to producing world class ESD and SD materials. As such, we submit our work to renowned global experts, and we edit and redraft until ‘expert’ status is granted to our work. It is only at this point where we issue and disseminate our publications.
Size of academic audience:
Audience in Chihuahua, México, the first publication— …Sustainable Development Goals Teachers’ Resource Book is being piloted by students fulfilling their Practicum requirements. The book has also been made available to Secretariat of Public Education’s
Results:
° An important result of Transformation Press’ first project was to enable a selected group of English majors at Autonomous University of Chihuahua to publish a book which, after fourteen rounds of revision, was presented to the RCE community at the 2017 Global Conference in Okayama, Japan. The back-and-forth processes of writing and publishing an edited, refereed book has led to a self-discovery in our Young Authors of their own greatness and of their limitless capacity to work for the greater good. This has allowed them to grow immeasurably as human beings. It has also sown in many of them a lifelong commitment to Sustainable Development and to Sustainability Education. Thank you RCE Community for honoring the very arduous work of our talented young people!

° A further result of the first Transformation Press project lies in the graciousness of the RCE Community in allowing us to make the teaching materials available for educators worldwide by uploading it to the RCE website. Thank you!

° The aforementioned are the primary results of the pilot publication. At RCE BMU, we humbly ask that the RCE Community allow us to coordinate and to publish ESD materials through a series of inter-RCE collaborative projects, as we believe that these materials can provide a great boost to Education for Sustainable Development worldwide.
Lessons learned:
° One of the greatest lessons learned by the Young Authors is that they are capable of creating for the greater good much beyond the limits that they may have held unconsciously in their minds. The discovery that they have been able to produce this book at offer it worldwide had allowed them to grow immeasurably in their self-confidence, and in their commitment to Education for Sustainable Development.

° Through the fourteen rounds of editing, refereeing and re-drafting, the Young Authors learned that it takes a great deal of commitment to reach excellence, that if they truly want to be on the cutting edge, they must submit their work to critique beyond themselves and beyond the requirements of ‘the usual university course.’ During the long process of drafting and re-drafting, the editors of the book were sometimes seen as ‘the bad guys,’ demanding that the students re-work and perfect their input in response to the critical eye of referees and others. We hope that they now understand that the high level of demand was exacted on them in order to encourage them to work at their highest possible level.

° The Young Authors also learned to take criticism, which is not necessarily easy for any human being. The first round of editing was always conducted among classmates-- among the Young Authors themselves. For many, it was initially very difficult to have their work critiqued by their peers. They eventually learned to take the peer-to-peer critique fairly well. Further critique by ‘unknown referees’ and by their editors always meant more work for them, as they were asked to re-draft their chapters in light of these professional-level critiques. Naturally, this brought about some stress among the Young Authors. However, now that their book is published, we hope that they appreciate the level of demand placed on them at their young age to produce world class material.

° The Young Authors lived through the typical rigorous academic publication process. It was likely a shock to some of them, but they stuck with it, and they managed to get themselves published. We hope that several of them will choose to enter post-graduate studies, and to produce first-class ESD research and materials in the future.
Key messages:
° We are capable of great things if we are willing to stick with the process, to receive constructive criticism, and to produce at our highest level.

° As authors, and as people committed to sustainable development, each of us has a great deal of agency as proactive subjects in the process of transformation toward a truly sustainable world.
Relationship to other RCE activities:
° RCE BMU works throughout the borderlands region in the areas of Sustainable Development and Education for Sustainable Development. As such, the Transformation Press book on ESD—produced by RCE BMU Youth—has arisen organically from the daily activities of Living Lab/Centro de Diálogo y Transformación, from Curriculum and Design in ESD students at the University of Chihuahua, and from the activities of RCE BMU in general.
Funding:
° Mexican federal government funding from the Secretariat of Public Education granted to researcher Prof. Dr. Carolina López C.

° Money from then pocket of Prof. Dr. Carolina López C.

° Living Lab/Centre for Dialogue & Transformation- Kerala Branch, and Government of the State of Kerala, India have graciously funded the publication of hard copies of the book.

° Income from the sale of hard copies of Transformation Press' publications.
