MIYIO is an annual competition since 2014. The competition was based on students addressing/solving a problem through scientific experimental research, producing authentic innovations and specifically, the objectives are:
i. Provide a platform for students to develop problem-solving skills.
ii. To develop students scientific skills and potential related to the chosen problem.
iii. Promote students’ social and communication skills.
iv. Elevate student's ability and knowledge of science and engineering.
v. Encourage teachers to engage students in the latest innovations through this competition and prioritize aspects of sustainability.
vi. As a platform to expand the activities of the Innovation and Design Club, SM Science Sultan Mohamad Jiwa's Science Club.
vii. To encourage a network of cooperation between members of the ESD Network (RSEN) and the Sejahtera Club under the management of the Regional Center of Expertise (RCE) Penang, Universiti Sains Malaysia
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
MIYIO has become a flagship program under the Residential School Division, Ministry of Education as an annual program. MIYIO was able to attract more than 800 teachers and students from Malaysia and also Thailand, Iraq, Filipina, Kyrgystan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Indonesia, Nigeria dan Amerika Syarikat. Status:
Completed
Period:
April, 2019
Rationale:
The project required students working in a group to identify a problem in society and then propose solutions using scientific methodology: Plan, Resource, Design, Experiment, Analyse, Conclude, Reflect, Improve, Finalize experiment, Report, and Present. These processes required the students to innovate using sustainable elements and encouraged the students to continuously undertake scientific research to sharpen their thinking skills as well as viewed the problem and solution from the perspectives of the 17 SDGs.
The reporting and presenting of the projects take place during the MIYIO competition. The MIYIO competition approach provides the following advantage for University School partnership:
1. Allow schools to organize an international event when university collaborates.
2. Capacity building for teachers as they experience organizing international competition: communicate with teachers from schools in Malaysia and also schools from other countries
3. Capacity building for students too as they are also involved in organizing the competition
4. RCE network provide a smooth platform to engage schools which are members of other RCEs
5. Quality of the projects presented- judges are from university and related industry. Judges are faculty members from various disciplines and have wide experience in judging innovative competitions
6. List the number of projects and participants
7. For the competition itself, there is much interest from students both in Malaysia and Asia pacific.
8. The theme s for the competition are: medical, electronics
9. The process of preparing for the competition enhance students communication skills, ability to present
10. The problem-solving process itself that the students undertake - part of 21st-century learning - confidence, collaboration, creativity

Some example of projects from 2019 MIYIO competition include Biogas-Food Waste, Heatshield- Kapok Fibre, Toilet Fragrance – Pandan Leaves, Biodegradable Plastic - Corn Cob, Sorbents – Walnut Shells, Alternative Medicine - Olive Stone, Diarrhoea Prevention For Sheep- Apollinaris Herb, Biodiesel- Using Oat (Avena Sativa) Oil and To Fight Tobacco Addiction - Natural Herb Called Hypericum
Objectives:
i. Provide a platform for students to develop problem-solving skills.
ii. To develop students scientific skills and potential related to the chosen problem.
iii. Promote students’ social and communication skills.
iv. Elevate students' ability and knowledge of science and engineering.
v. Encourage teachers to engage students in the latest innovations through this competition and prioritize aspects of sustainability.
vi. As a platform to expand the activities of the Innovation and Design Club, SM Science Sultan Mohamad Jiwa's Science Club.
