5. Project description
Provide a short description of the project including strategies, regional challenges, aims and specific project activities.:

The project is all about the volunteerism actions to increase the sustainable awareness and practices among Malaysian citizen. One of the projects is by the “Kampus Sejahtera” Secretariat Universiti Sains Malaysia, USM (or known as Healthy Campus USM). This secretariat gathers over 200 student volunteers in USM Main Campus, Penang and over 100 students volunteers in another two USM campuses, which is in Nibong Tebal, Penang and Kubang Kerian, Kelantan. The main objective of this project is to produce sustainable citizen once these students complete their study in USM.

The objectives of this project are as follows:

 To educate every residents in the campus to responsible with their surrounding issues.

 To provide a conducive physical environment and social facilities for all residents of the campus.

 To promote ideas of sustainability those are environmental friendly and directly promotes to a healthy and wholesome lifestyle.

 To monitor the quality of health and its services to all residents of the campus.

 To support any sustainability based activities.

There are four stages per phase in this project. The first phase is for the first year students in order to create a mind-set for every individual to take responsibility for the sustainable campus. This is a good kick start to them for the next steps. The next stage is focused on the second year students who can handle few projects for sustainability either internally or externally of USM campuses. This will create green environment in the atmosphere of the campus itself. At this point too, these student volunteers will go outside of the campus to transfer knowledge through community engagement. While, at the third stage is mainly for the third year student volunteers or in their final year of study. Being at this stage, they would become the Green Mentors for the first and second year’s student volunteers. Once graduated from university, they should be able become sustainable citizen. In other words, they can educate people and gain practices towards sustainability development. This project is recognized as a sustainable project since the sustainable citizen produced over the time, and repeated over the time.

Some of the activities under this project are composting, recycling at hostels and paper reducing campaign. After a few months of handling this project, we received very good responses and being well accepted among either the students or staffs of USM. The project is already being implemented since 2000 and now a serious establishment and movement by “Kampus Sejahtera” is executed to meet the objectives.
