Research done toward the community in Kuala Lumpur about littering issues and the result is disappointing where majority of them are involved in this problem. In this community’s stream, there is high content of organic waste (food waste). The community are lack of technical support and knowledge in municipal organic waste composting. High content of food waste has resulted in unpleasant smells during collection and at waste storage centre.



1. To create awareness of food waste segregation at source and negative impacts of food waste disposal to landfill among selected communities of Kuala Lumpur.

2. To inculcate the best practice of food waste segregation at source to the selected communities of Kuala Lumpur.

3. To improve the overall solid waste management system in the selected communities


Knowledge transferred:

1. Identifying the target group and their locations

2. Communication with the target group on the proposed awareness program

3. Implementation of awareness program in several forms: Talks, seminars, exhibition.

4. Monitoring of the effectiveness of awareness program by gauging the level of practice of food waste segregation as well as community composting among the selected groups.

5. Prepare report on the outcomes of awareness and capacity building program.


Impact of project:

1. This program will benefit the selected communities in KL, with the cultivation of best practice of food waste segregation at sources. Besides, the communities will enjoy free organic compost produced.

2. The duration of the benefit will be forever as the practice as food waste segregation becomes a habit and perpetual behaviour among the communities.

3. The potential scale to magnify the benefit is vast, as the beneficiary will spread the messages and best practice to their friends and families as well as pass to their next generations.
