Provide a short description of the project including strategies, regional challenges, aims and specific project activities.:

Bangladesh is an alluvial floodplain with hundreds of rivers, canals, ponds and water bodies. The importance of the wetlands has significance for ecosystem. But the modern landscape management does not consider this and has unsustainable agricultural and infrastructure development work. As a result, wet lands of the country are shrinking with the danger of depletion of water resources and increased vulnerability of flood, drought and climate extremes. The situation in the North Bengal with prolong drought and water scarcity is accelerating with the changing climate and threatening food security of this densely populated country. Wetland Landscape management is of prime importance now to fight with climate change induced drought, flood and many other natural disasters and to ensure food security. Although Bangladesh is a riverine country but most of the land is floodplain, during the wet season it flooded but in the dry season there is a great crisis of water. People used to withdraw underground water by deep tube wells and the aquifers are drying up every year the watertable is going down on an average one meter and there is a huge water crisis in both urban and rural areas. Clime extremes like drought and floods hampering day to day life and causing crisis of water in agriculture, fish farming and industrial production. Traditionally these water crisis was managed by excavating large deep water reservoirs and this project has investigated and convinced the government institution to re-excavate the water bodies to reserve surface water.

Description:
During the period of Green Revolution most of the wet bodies are filled with earth for agricultural extension. As result, As a result a huge water and fish crises developed. Moreover, withdrawal of river water by the neighboring countries the situation has been deteriorated further. The frequency of Climate extremes like drought, floods and cyclones, have been increased. thus every year millions of people suffer from calamities. Since underground water has been withdrawing people still are not aware of water crisis. The normal tube-wells becoming dry and inactive due to withdrawal of ground water. The Northern regions of the country have been suffering seriously due to water crisis. But in the early nineteenths more than five thousand deep ponds were excavated to mitigate water crisis in this region. But during the introduction of deep tube-well for HYV rice crop in the dry monsoon have change the total scenario. Phases of flora and fauna have been changed and have lost many flora and fauna thus affected biodiversity seriously.
As result, this project has been under taken to mitigate water crisis as well as to hold surface water for during the wet season and recharging of ground water-table.
