Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area :
Munich is a large city with over 1.5 million inhabitants. Munich is located in the federal state of Bavaria, in the south of Germany. Munich is a center for culture, politics, science and media and numerous companies have their headquarters here. The foothills of the Alps offer many opportunities for excursions into the beautiful nature.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
Munich is a city with many neighborhoods that have many different faces. It was important for us to present various neighborhood projects that were strongly influenced by civil society organizations. In addition, we addressed the problems during the pandemic in our series of talks in order to reach the people in the neighborhoods.

Status:
Ongoing
Period:
April, 2021 to June, 2022
Rationale:
During the pandemic, life in the neighborhoods changed a lot and we asked ourselves the question: "Living in times of Corona - how much change does our future need?
Our discussion partners exchanged views with participants from the districts of Au - Haidhausen and Berg am Laim on various key topics.
How does it feel to live in a neighborhood with Corona?
A conversation with Mathias Brandstätter, director of the neighborhood meeting place BAUM 20 (Berg am Laim)
Between problems and confidence in the future.
An interview with Gerhard Mayer, Head of the Office for Housing and Migration (LHM).
Creatively into the future.
A conversation with Claudia Collin, communication designer.
Objectives:
Munich citizens volunteer in their neighborhoods in museums, theaters, libraries or associations. Many institutions already dedicate themselves, in their context, to individual aspects of sustainability and include the 2030 Agenda, some of the 17 SDGs and the pedagogical-didactic concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in their work. Civic engagement enables valuable experiences, learning processes and competence development/improvement and contributes significantly to a participatory urban culture. The aim of our approach is to pick up citizens from their own environmental, social, cultural and economic issues and to integrate them into a holistic understanding of life in a global world: according to the motto: "Thinking outside the box!
Activities and/or practices employed:
Sustainable urban development plays an increasingly important role and it is often - in big cities - "broken down" to the neighborhoods, but what does sustainable neighborhood development mean? Sustainable neighborhood development does not only refer to housing concepts and commercial areas, but also to mobility concepts, traffic route design or, for example, public green spaces. In the best case, sustainable neighborhood development is an innovative, participatory, community-oriented, sustainable and inclusive urban development process. Some neighborhoods are developing their very own cultures. We introduce you to three Munich neighborhoods and their sustainable concepts and approaches: Prinz Eugen Park, Ackermannbogen and Berg am Laim.
We conducted interviews with civil society organizations that contribute to the development of their neighborhoods and made two films out of them.
Size of academic audience:
~ 1500 persons
Results:
Through the different implementation of the project: digital district interviews (during the pandemic) with citizens and cinematic implementation of the interviews, we reach many viewers to this day.
Lessons learned:
The neighborhood talks have involved many citizens who have been able to share their concerns, fears and problems from the pandemic in this format. The films continue to reach people interested in the topic of neighborhood development in cities.
Key messages:
Neighborhood development is more than building! - How citizens shape active neighborhoods.
Funding:
The project was made possible by the financial support of the German Postcode Lottery etc.
