Target Audience:
Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area :
Green Technology is defined as the development and application of products, equipment and systems used
to conserve the natural environment and resources, which minimizes negative impacts of human activities (KeTTHA, 2016). All tools, products and systems that are able to reduce environmental quality degradation, low or zero greenhouse gases emission, saving energy and natural resources, using renewable energy sources and safe towards the environment are all considered as Green Technology. In comparison to the existing technology, Green Technology is an environmentally-friendly technology and having less carbon emission to the air.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
The world population is exponentially increasing due to the improvement in life quality, health services, daily needs and life infrastructures that are able to provide more comfort and are convenient to human. Henceforth, with the increase of world’s population, the demands for a necessity or natural resources are also increasing considerably. However, unmanaged natural resources management may lead to environmental pollution and imbalance of the bio-ecosystem. Uncontrollable deforestation, emission of dangerous smoke from factories and motorized vehicles, and open burning are among the factors contributing to degradation in life quality and the environment. If this problem continues, our precious Earth may be destroyed. The main problem that we are addressing currently is global warming and climate change. These challenges need to be handled wisely and collectively to ensure the continuation of living things on Earth which include humans, animals and plants in the future. In Malaysia, the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC) is being given a portfolio regarding Green Technology. Green Technology has been identified as a sustainable solution towards handling and solving environmental issues. By organizing this carnival; it is hoped that the knowledge and awareness of Green Technology, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency can be shared and practiced nationwide as an effort towards better future.

Status:
Ongoing
Period:
May, 2015 to December, 2019
Rationale:
The carnival aims to support and implement the National Green Technology Policy 2009 especially the Strategic Thrust 3 (Intensify Human Capital Development in Green Technology) and Strategic Thrust 5 (Promotion and Public Awareness).
Strategic Thrust 3 in National Green Technology Policy is in line with the implementation of this carnival as having the educational elements and training via competitions related to Green Technology and hence increasing the capacity of trained human resources in order to fulfil the demand in Green Technology industries in the near future. In addition, in order to support Strategic Thrust 5, this carnival can act as continuous and effective promotional element, a platform to spread knowledge and information through comprehensive competitions to raise public awareness about Green Technology and effectively demonstrate the application of Green Technology.
Objectives:
Objectives
i. To create awareness among students, teachers and the community about the importance of Green Technology knowledge and its effects in life applications.
ii. To initiate inventive and innovative culture based on Green Technology.
iii. To polish students’ interest towards engineering and architecture based on Green Technology
iv. To prepare activities across the curriculum by the integration and implementation of Science, Mathematics, Arts and ICT.
Activities and/or practices employed:
This project is carried out via 8 competitions which are:
1. Competition 1: Green Technology Innovation
• Participants compete by inventing innovative and environmental-friendly products or ideas focusing on Green Technology
2. Competition 2: Green Technology Urban Design
• Participants are required to create and present an organized city model incorporated with Green Technology components
3. Competition 3: Biomass Energy Innovation
• Participants need to produce dry cell from biomass materials
4. Competition 4: Green Technology Show
• Participants need to incorporate Green Technology into their fun and creative show.
5. Competition 5: Solar Vehicle Challenge
• Participants are required to invent a solar vehicle that able to go through obstacles on the circuit as future transport concept which applies Green Technology
6. Competition 6: Green Cooker Challenge
• Participants need to invent a functional solar cooker/stove that has Green Technology criteria.
7. Competition 7: Green Technology Xplorace
• 16 teams representing 16 state contingents compete in this physical-enduring competition while completing tasks and answering questions about Green Technology
8. Competition 8: Green Technology Quiz
• The best four teams from Xplorace will compete in the quiz competition; with questions ranging from general knowledge and Green Technology
Size of academic audience:
2500 secondary schools all around Malaysia (in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak).
Results:
GTIC 2016
6 – 9 November 2016 : Cinta Sayang Resort, Sungai Petani, Kedah

GTIC 2017
10 – 13 October 2017 : Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC),
Malaysian Green Technology Corporation
(MGTC) & Universiti Tenaga Nasional
(UNITEN)
GTIC 2018
20 – 23 November 2018 : Pulai Springs Resort, Johor
Lessons learned:
In most competitions; exhibitions are held in order to give the participants the chance to demonstrate and engage in public sharing session of their products and innovation and also their research with the audiences. They are also able to hone their skills in science & technology by the hands-on and minds-on activities being outlined in this carnival.
Key messages:
Teachers find the carnival to be interactive and informative for the students especially in raising awareness and demonstrating the application of Green Technology, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in schools and daily activities
Relationship to other RCE activities:
This project is one of the activities being held by CETREE, Yayasan Hijau Malaysia, MESTECC, and MOE in order to promote Green Technology and its applications in secondary school co-curriculum activities.

Other related project: Training of Trainers (TOT) Workshop which involves selected secondary school teachers from around Malaysia in the implementation of Green Technology by using modules developed by CETREE, MESTECC and MOE.
Funding:
Funding from Yayasan Hijau Malaysia.
