Description of RCE and Geographic Region:

Kyrgyzstan is located in Central Asia, and is a landlocked, mountainous country with high a concentration of biodiversity not only at the ecosystem level, but also at the species level. In spite of the area of the Kyrgyz Republic, it has a high diversity of species about 1% of all known species on the Earth's surface of 0.13%. The country is home to snow leopards, lynx, and sheep. The Tian Shan mountains surround the old Silk route.

RCE Kyrgyzstan was initiated by Bishkek Humanitarian University and the State Agency of Environmental protection in 2006.

Goals and Objectives:

The main goal of RCE Kyrgyzstan is the promotion of education for sustainable development in Kyrgyzstan.


  • Reorienting higher education institutions for ESD
  • Development of capacity building programs for educators on SDGs
  • Development of biodiversity conservation programs in frame of the Society of Conservation Biology of Central Asia Chapter
  • Youth involvement in promotion of sustainable campus, and youth ESD programs

Current Activities:
  • Curricula development on SDGs, international relations in nature conservation, ecological tourism, SDGs
  • Conducting lectures within Faculty of Ecology and Tourism for Master degree students

Upcoming Activities:
  • Preparation project proposal on capacity building for Arabaev KSU educators on sustainable development and ESD
  • Development programs, project and website for Central Asian Chapter for Society on Conservation Biology

RCE Kyrgyzstan has developed a program to improve the capacity of teachers and state officials. The overall project objective: Capacity building for decision makers and educators on Sustainable development and DESD implementation, program focused on:

  • Capacity building for educators, government representatives, local communities and youth; 
  • Implementation of SD principles to schools, Higher Institutions and TVET programs;
  • Introduction of SD principles to government system;
  • Access to information materials on SD&ESD.

Program activities:

  • Prepared of Study Module on SD&ESD;
  • Conducted 6 training for government representatives and educators in the country;
  • Published project materials: Training Module, reading book and CD on Russian language;
  • Program materials disseminated around training participants and stakeholders;
  • Translated training module in Kyrgyz language.

Project materials “SD Training module” disseminated among Kyrgyz schoolteachers and Higher Education Institutions. The project was supported by USA Embassy in Kyrgyzstan recognised as the best project of the year 2008-2009 among US State Department alumnus.

RCE Kyrgyzstan has implemented a number of projects with donors support: UNESCO Kazakhstan National Office, US Embassy in the Kyrgyz Republic, EURASIA Foundation in KR, HELVETAS Swiss Inter-cooperation, US State Department, USAID, OSCE. RCE Kyrgyzstan implemented more than 15 projects in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia, and received awards from UNU as Outstanding Flagship Project in 2014 and 2015: RCE Kyrgyzstan project – Strengthening the role of education for sustainable development in the process of transition to “green” skills in Technical Vocational Education System (TVET) and micro, small, medium enterprises in Kyrgyz Republic (Category B: UNU Acknowledged Flagship Project for contributing to capacity development).
