Vision:

RCE Waikato will strengthen and deepen collaboration for education and sustainable development, including climate change education, and partnering with Mãori, weave together existing enterprises and catalyse new initiatives for enhancing sustainability in the central region of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Goals and objectives:

RCE Waikato will facilitate collaborative engagement for interdisciplinary and integrated practices in education as a hallmark of sustainable societies. Communities of practice for ‘living well with the earth’ will include ethics and values for the social, economic, environmental and cultural dimensions of  teaching and learning.

Upcoming Activities:
  • Collaboration with 4 NGOs for community engagement and research on climate change learning in formal and informal education. The feature is to design an integrated programme for climate learning in schools from preschool to secondary and vocational training, and to run ‘pilots’ as 2 case studies of community engagement and NGO contributions to formal climate change learning. This includes working with Māori, and with Pacific indigenous partners
  • As part of this collaboration design and run one or two professional development climate change learning workshops
  • Pursue further research on public trust and legal personhood as frameworks to support public good interests for ecosystem services and sustainable societies
Achievements:
  • In 2017 – Two Interdisciplinary stakeholder workshops on climate change education
  • March 2018 – Symposium on climate change education over 100 participants and organisational representatives
  • July 2018 – Collaboration with indigenous and international experts on law and governance for living well with the earth. Publication of ‘ResponsAbility. Law and Governance for Living Well with the Earth’ – an edited collection with leading Pacific international contributors
