Has your RCE undertaken any form of self-evaluation process over the course of this year? If yes, please briefly describe:
a)Criteria/indicators used to assess aspects of RCE work/project:(Character count 300 words):
Independent consultants Netpositive were commissioned to undertake a review and collate reflections from stakeholders of the RCEs work and contributions. Partners and stakeholders of RCE Severn were invited to join the process in the form of written feedback, which provided qualitative indicators for assessing the extent to which RCE Severn’s activities and contributions have progressed the network towards achieving its vision and objectives. This independent evaluation presented a critical reflection and assessment of RCE Severn’s role, reach and impact in brokering partnerships and engaging learning communities in sustainability.
b)Successes of the RCE and lessons learned:(Character count 300 words):
RCE Severn consortium was recognised as a unique platform for establishing a culture of collaboration. It brings together stakeholders from all societal sectors that do not generally have opportunity or reason to work together on issues of sustainability education. It has played a catalytic role in stimulating innovative thinking and practice in sustainability through its wide diversity of learning activities and especially through its programme of events. The focus on student engagement and employability is key to continue supporting University of Gloucestershire strategic priorities and provides a good entry point to prompt new partnerships and create collaborative projects and activities with new partners. Its work on supporting the student entrepreneurship and employability agendas has been critical to progress the University’s strategic goals and enhance the student experience in sustainability. Newsletters have proved to be a valuable communication tool as they keep members informed about regional and international developments on sustainability education and provide a platform for partners to promote their activities, events and news. This regular communication tool increases awareness of sustainability education issues from the local to international level. Internationally, RCE Severn has been an active participant stimulating dialogue around sustainability and education. The profile of RCE Severn has provided opportunities for international collaboration through attracting funding from the European Commission. RCE has taken important steps in 2015 to re-engage and re-energise the network. It has refreshed its governance structures and approach to working groups as well as mapped partners’ expectations and levels of commitment.
c)Challenges experiences:(Character count 300 words):
Engaging partners in RCE initiatives and governance has proved to be challenging. This is due to partners’ lack of time, lack of culture of collaboration in sustainability education and RCE having to initiate partnerships and projects in line with new University priorities. As awareness builds of the RCE, a culture of collaboration and partnerships across the region is beginning to increase. Limited direct funding for the RCE accounts for the limited number of activities and initiatives created. Given greater resources by committing the RCE Severn Coordinator to applying for local grants to support more community driven initiatives could support partners to work together on tangible projects and increase the value and relevance of RCE within the community. Feedback from partners highlighted the importance that the mission of RCE Severn is reiterated and effectively communicated internally and externally, so that colleagues understand that this is not an environmental action group but a consortium of partners engaged in sustainability education and learning.
