Has your RCE undertaken any form of self-evaluation process over the course of this year? If yes, please briefly describe:
a)Criteria/indicators used to assess aspects of RCE work/project:(Character count 300 words):
The RCE is rather new in terms of project evaluation however an Evaluation exercise was conducted by SADC REEP on 16th May 2014.
b)Successes of the RCE and lessons learned:(Character count 300 words):
1. Although RCE activities involving collaboration have not yet started, the RCE have been invited to interact with ESD practitioners at institutional events, a platform that was convenient to publicise the RCE. The last few months saw the RCE participating in three such occasions. First, RCE presenting at a workshop for teachers from the Eco-schools programme was a welcome opportunity to advertise the RCE, mobilize schools to become RCE members and enhance collaboration on RCE activities. The event was coordinated by Mukuvisi Woodlands. The response from participates was overwhelmingly positive. The RCE has since compiled a register of these schools to become RCE members. Secondly, the RCE participated in the Mukuvisi Woodlands World Environment Day commemorations. The event was attended by children and teachers from Eco-schools as well as several government officials, Environment Africa, Environment Management Agency, Birdlife Zimbabwe, and many others including the media. The RCE was again given an opportunity to preach to the converted and encourage participants to link their activities with Harare RCE. Thirdly, a workshop was organized for RCE stakeholders to reaffirm roles and commitment of stakeholders to the RCE, as a response to the capacity development need that was raised in the evaluation exercise. The workshop also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to concretise implementation plans for RCE collaborative projects. The meeting resolved that publicity and advocacy was still a priority for the RCE. A team was tasked to create a Facebook page, Whatsapp group, Twitter platform to support communication and dissemination of information concerning the RCE. A team was also tasked to prepare, produce and distribute readable material such as pamphlets, brochures or magazine on RCE activities. It was proposed that media personnel be invited to sign an MOU to cover all RCE events and activities in future.
c)Challenges experiences:(Character count 300 words):
The following are some of the challenges that RCE Harare have experienced since its inception. 1. Because most members have full time jobs elsewhere in various organizations or institutions availing themselves to RCE work can be difficult at times despite having signed commitment forms. The RCE intends to hold workshops for individual institutions to encourage a more whole institution approach targeting management. 2. The lack of funds specifically set aside for RCE activities was hindering progress and growth. One fundraising strategy members believe could attract funding is to make the RCE as visible as possible. This has delayed the launching of the RCE. 3. Bureaucracy in government departments was cited by members as a constant frustrating development when attempting to involve schools or to bring officials from different ministries to participate in ESD activities. 4. There is generally poor coordination of ESD activities in the country such that members find themselves being invited to two events on the same day. As a result there was great need for the RCE to align activities with other organisation to enable members to have unlimited opportunity to participate in events they wish to.
