Session at DNC 2022 Explores Different Sector Approaches to Biodiversity Conservation

On 25 May, 2022, UNU-IAS participated in a session at the Dresden Nexus Conference 2022 (DNC 2022), organised by UNU-FLORES, TU Dresden, and the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER). The session, ‘Fostering Collective Action: Mainstreaming Biodiversity Across Sectors’, featured presentations on different sectors’ approaches to biodiversity conservation and restoration in their respective fields.

Webinar: The Impact of Climate Change and Displacement on the Right to Education

UNESCO is organising a webinar on the Impacts of Climate Change and Displacement on the Right to Education in remembrance of two powerful cyclones that hit southeast Asia in May 2019 and May 2020 – climatic catastrophes that displaced millions of people overnight – to stimulate a global dialogue around the impact of climate change and displacement on the right to education. 

Project Neuru Season 2 Orientation Event Held

On 14 May, 2022, RCE Dobong‐gu held a Zoom orientation for the ‘Global ESD Youth Project Neuru Season 2', a project to improve ecological literacy and glocal leadership of domestic and foreign youths. 'Neuru' is a Korean word meaning 'for a long time, not all at once', which could be translated to aiming for sustainable development for youth for a long time.

The conservation of biodiversity has long had a contested relationship with the field of education for sustainable development (ESD). Many scholars have posited that ESD seeks to center anthropogenic systems within an understanding of the biosphere in education initiatives. However, in recent years a more nuanced view of ESD’s role in biodiversity conservation that conceptualises biodiversity conservation and human development initiatives complimenting rather than competing with one another has taken root.

RCE Suzhou Events Held to Commemorate Stockholm+50

On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, RCE Suzhou recently organised a series of events providing young students with opportunities to dialogue with various representative stakeholders to deepen their understanding of the journey and challenges of human environment and sustainable development in the past 50 years.

International Day for Biological Diversity 2022 — Building a Shared Future for All Life

This symposium will celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity 2022, building momentum and support for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework to be adopted at the upcoming UN Biodiversity Conference. Biodiversity remains the answer to many sustainable development challenges. From nature-based solutions to climate, health issues, food and water security, and sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity is the foundation upon which we can build back better.

RCE Biodiversity Education Projects Featured in New Video

A new video highlighting the RCE Biodiversity Education Projects conducted during the Global Action Programme (GAP) on ESD, from 2015-2019, puts a spotlight on the range of innovative projects focused on biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration from the Global RCE Network.

A total of 135 RCE projects across 30 countries focused on SDG 14 (Life Below Water) or SDG 15 (Life on Land), and were tied to SDG 4 (Quality Education) along with a range of other goals.
