Target Audience:
Status:
Ongoing
Period:
January, 2021
Rationale:
By building a sense of community for sustainability minded students at Kennesaw State University, we are able to better advocate for and create changes at our institution
Objectives:
By promoting an incredibly interdisciplinary vision of sustainability at our institution, we bring together students from all fields of study to focus on collaboration and community. This community is able to work towards changed culture and policies far more effectively than individual students and organizations
Activities and/or practices employed:
Kennesaw State University has nearly two dozen student organizations that have a focus on some aspect of sustainability. We focus on building collaboration between the student leaders that carry these organizations. We connect students with the organizations that best align with their passions. These organizations form a web of communication to support initiatives on our campuses and show the student demand for change.
Size of academic audience:
1000
Results:
In part because of the work our student leaders have done to mobilize this portion of the student body, the Student Government Association has promoted the sustainability senator seat to a student director of sustainability and have passed a proclamation in support of a sustainability student fee to enable these student groups to have the necessary resources to actively host projects on campus that can last long after anyone one of these individual students graduate
Lessons learned:
As students face many competing priorities during this stage of their life, maintaining continuity of these organizations is a consistent challenge. We hope to leverage our community of student leaders to encourage younger students to lead their colleagues
