Description of RCE and Geographic Region:

RCE Ilocos is located in the Ilocos region on the northwestern coast of Luzon island Philippines. The region has direct access to international sea lanes, as it is bound on the east by the South China Sea and the Central Cordillera mountain range on the west. It is expected to develop export-oriented agri-industrial and tourism activities due to its proximity to Taiwan, Hong Kong and southern China. The region is composed of towering mountains, thick forests and narrow coastal plains.

Goals and Objectives:

RCE Ilocos is working:

  1. To inculcate sustainability science to Filipinos and recognise and/or change the role of the people in sustainable development practices, including shifts in behaviour, values, and production and consumption patterns for people empowerment;
  2. To develop public awareness and understanding about education for sustainable development (ESD) between and among the primary, secondary, collegiate and post-graduate levels of education (formal and/or non-formal) in the community, national and international levels;
  3. To establish a one-stop-shop office showcasing RCE and UNU wealth of data and information for exchange of information on ESD, including document/showcase best practices on ESD in the region and worldwide;
  4. To establish a regional knowledge base and one platform for exchange of information on ESD and good practices in the region towards attainment of SDGs; and
  5. To strengthen linkages and partnership among local and international institutions for ESD for sharing of expertise, productivity and excellence.
