Description of RCE and Geographic Region:

The RCE Ruhr is operating in the Ruhr area, located in the West of Germany close to the Dutch border, an area well-known as the industrial heart of Germany for over two centuries. The Ruhr, with its more than 5 million residents is the largest urban agglomeration in Germany and the fifth largest urban area in Europe after Istanbul, Moscow, London and Paris. The region is a melting pot of different cultures – immigrants from over 140 nations have been settling in the area in times of coal, iron and steel production as well as in more recent times.

RCE Ruhr is based on a civil society-oriented bottom-up approach, making it currently the only one of its kind. It creates a network of existing formal, non-formal and informal education for sustainable development to be sustained and carried into the heart of civil society.

Goals and Objectives:
  • RCE Ruhr aims to create a structure that brings together stakeholders from the fields of education, culture and arts, global education, economic, social, natural and environmental, urban and regional development and research.
