Student Community Services (SCS) is a university wide curriculum in Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, assigned for third or fourth year students. During the SCS program, students stayed within 2 months in the village and together with community create program dedicated to village development
Bone Bolango is a recent regency developed in Gorontalo province in 2003, located in northern Sulawesi with total area of 1,984.54 km2. Almost 50% of the area is dedicated for forest conservation area, the National Park of Bogani Nani Wartabone (BB Statistical Bureau, 2013) as the conservation area for tropical mega-biodiversity. Biogeographically, Sulawesi island is a unique island that have mixture of flora and fauna communities between Asian and Australian
SCS thematic program started from 1st of July and end on 30th August 2013 conducted in Pinogu sub-district, Suwawa, Bone Bolango Regency. Two main programs have been conduc-ted in Pinogu during SCS are: 1) coffee-based agribusiness, including rejuvenate local coffee species (C. liberica) that had been neglected for decades, and educate society in coffee production, and 2) early ecotourism baseline study, and also community education on habitat analysis for maleo and tarsius conservation, the unique endemic fauna from Sulawesi.
As a learning program, ESD-based concepts, in this case biodiversity conservation, were inserted into SCS thematic program. SCS has 3 different targets of learning: an individual learning (student learning), a community learning, and an institutional learning. In Pinogu, we hope community awareness about C.liberica, T. spectrum, M. maleo conservation principles will sustain.

the first year program is closed but for the whole program is still continued
12. Duration of the Project Start Date: End date::

Describe Coordination and management of the project. Please also reflect how the RCE as a network organization has contributed to the project and the challenges involved, if any. Character count 400 words :
RCE has involved in the ESD socialization within University lecturer’s training and also to students who are engaged to the SCS-CEL program since 2007. With support from the local government funding and data, we designed a SCS programs based on problems in the village and community. Then communicate the programs with the local government and also students before they went to the place. At least students who had been introduced and trained about ESD, they are aware the village problems, they got used to work in the multidisciplinary group, they will be ready to do programs in the village as their actualizations.
14. What are the current results of the project in terms of outputs (e.g. publications, developed practices, course materials)? Character count 300 words:
One article is going to be submitted in the relevant journal (attached)

The current results of the project at least change local authority mind and local society point of view toward environment in development planning. Most of our suggestions (should prioritize primary sector development (rejuvenation of coffee plantation and post harvest production training) rather than go for secondary or tertiary sector (mining or services) had been applied in their budget planning.
15. What are the expected/confirmed outcomes (e.g. impact of the project) Character count 400 words:
All the basic training for local people about coffee industry was still practice, coffee seedling have been taken good care and also good management of coffee plantation (how to make organic fertilizer, when plant need to be fertilized) were still conducted. About tersier conservation, some students and 3 talented local persons (Jeffry, Sako and Taufik) should be trained in TangkokoNature Reserve to get skill on culturing Tarsius spectra
16. Are there any unexpected/unplanned results achieved by your project? If yes, briefly describe or list them . Character count 200 words.:
Yes, especially when students have been challenged with thematic problems in the village that have been analyzed can be solved within a certain period, and facilitated them with limited budget but full of support in term of material (knowledge, experts) and more consul-tation time, cohesion time among them, they are giving their best performances
One idea about electricity based on micro-hydro plan (PLTMH) was also raised during SCS programs and local government plan to build one in Bulango Ulu sub-district next year.
17. What are the remaining challenges and/or limitations for further development? Character count 300 words.:
Since the SCS program collaboration with local government will run for three years, but when local government try to elaborate it to other places, we have to start all from the beginning, survey the resources and also the need of the people.
Especially to apply PLTMH, beside the budget is limited (in term of time we cannot find supporting agent), also the management process and designing micro-hydro is taking time more than a year.
18. What is the project’s contribution to innovative and transformative educational processes for sustainable development (especially regarding formal and/ non-formal learning/research)? Character count 500 words:
The SCS program is a transformative educational processes, not only for individual (students) learning, but also for institutional (local government and university) learning, and also for community (local people) learning. SCS with a special thematic program (project proponent should know the village problems and strategy to cope it with at least propose some small programs involving students creativities) is an innovative problem-based learning that make students actualize and improve their leaderships at the same time.
This approach is also able to be applied for research especially for students who are interested with thematic program, therefore not only for service program, but also they have more challenge in doing research later. This makes more sustainable to the program
19.How can you scale up and mainstream ESD and SD practices of the project and enable it to contribute to the implementation of the Global Action Programme (GAP) as proposed by UNESCO? (max 300 words):
Mainstream ESD practices in UGM mainly through SCS-CEL program. In term of sustainability of the program the university must have several collaborators (local governments or industries in order to get funding support and arena and place to actualize all the cream of hard and soft sciences of students in one focus, problem solving orientation.
This approach would be better if students before taking SCS had some basic training on ESD or had ESD concepts from their Study Program; e.q. ESD concepts were inserted into some core teaching subjects in the Study Program related to its special profession. Therefore, teacher/lecturer training as well as student training on ESD is important to obtain student actualization through SCS program.

20. How does you project contribute institutional and policy reforms as part of sustainability change? Character count 500 words:
The project we have done (expedition and community development concerning to biodiversity) contribute to the authority awareness (local government of Bone Bolango, and Indonesian Special Army, Kopassus) about our tropical mega-biodiversity.
For Authority in Bone Bolango, they realized that at least there are local nature resources (Coffea liberica, Durio zybethinus, and Arenga pinnata) have not been taken care effectively, and this could be the source for local economic development.
In term of fauna, tarsier (Tarsius spectra) and maleo (Macrocephalon maleo) distribution in Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park (NP) was the main icons for ecotourism in Bone Bolango that should be conserve and well culture before they open for tourist attraction.
21. How does your project further improve capacities of various partners and stakeholders on the theme? Character count 500 words.:
In terms of capacity building, local government authorities rotate some potential personals to the important organization as key changes (such as Dr. Ishak before he was the Head of Agriculture office moved to Local government secretary, Mr. Iwan Mustapa he was the head of Bappeda before and rotated to the Head of General Development Office). This rotation accelerated the process of sector development in Bone Bolango as general, within several future years.
We still try to continue collaboration during next two years with similar SCS thematic programs, in order to continue all the development strategic plan to achieve sustainable development goals of Bone Bolango within 5 year plan.
23. What is novel about the project within the RCE network and what could other RCEs learn from this experience? (Answer only if relevant) Character count 250 words.:
The novel of the biodiversity conservation project is the network between university, local government, and Indonesian special army concerning about biodiversity, that may not be applied in any RCE.
24. What is the significance of this project for the region? How important are its results for its particular project category? Character count 250 words.:
The significance of this project for the region is a unique species conservation model, through empowerment of local community in managing resources and improve local government’s awareness about their potential endemic species (tarsiers and maleo) and unique resources that can be used as one of its green economic leverage (ESD based policy).
