Organised by the Global RCE Service Centre, the RCE Youth Webinar 'Art, Actions, and Perspectives for Biodiversity Conservation' will be held virtually (online) on 12 August, 2022 to celebrate International Youth Day 2022.

The webinar will highlight youth-led activities addressing issues on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, and facilitate discussion to inspire more young people and other stakeholders in the Global RCE Network and beyond to accelerate efforts in these areas.

  • Opening Session
    • Opening Remarks - Dr. Jonghwi Park (Head of Innovation and Education, UNU-IAS)
    • Congratulatory Remarks - Mr. Reo Kawamura (Director of Office of Environmental Education, Ministry of the Environment, Japan)
  • Keynote Speeches - Speakers will share critical biodiversity issues that they work on and share their experiences in youth-led biodiversity conservation activities.
    • ‘Making Carbon Gardening Attractive’ - Ms. Daria Chekalskaia (Youth Climate Activist)
    • 'Youth Engagement in Conservation of Endangered Tree Species – Lessons from the Conservation of Kopak Tree within Zaria Region' - Mr. Muktar Ahmad (RCE Zaria, Nigeria)

Speakers' Bios

Daria Chekalskaia
Daria is an environmental engineer, climate science communicator & influencer @daria_check, Climate Investment Funds consultant & delegate to several UN conferences. She is also a permaculture gardener for the sake of carbon sequestration. Daria is passionate about climate communication and ways to make climate change challenges more actionable and less abstract.

Ahmad Muktar
Muktar is a youth leader at the Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development Zaria (RCE Zaria), and a researcher at the Centre for Spatial Information Science (CSIS) Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria. His interests in vegetation decrease and urban growth dynamics led him to champion several ESD projects within the Zaria Region.

Lian Castillo
Lian is an IT professional with a bachelor’s in Computer Science and a masters' in Information Studies. She’s passionate about bridging sustainable development and tech and has previously handled culture-based conservation research and blended learning. Lian is currently a research student in Sustainability Science at the University of Tokyo. During her spare time, Lian paints and has promoted conservation using wildlife as a subject.

Erica Lotus
Erica is an artist with a passion and love for the natural environment. Followed by her studies in ecologically changing climates, her dream is to inspire humanity to live mindfully for all living beings. Inspired by the Earth and the infinite universe, she creates art that embraces the hearts of the beholder giving radiance and life in the shared stories of invisible voices.
