Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area :
RCE Kitakyushu is a 10-minute walk from JR Kokura Station and located in the central shopping area of Kitakyushu, the birthplace of an arcade shopping street.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
The word ESD which was proposed by the government and NGOs in Japan in 2005 is now being forgotten.
However, in Kitakyushu, ESD is regarded as a educational concept to achieve the SDGs and has focused on environmental issues.
Recently, the focus has been on gender and peace as well as environmental issues.
We believe it is important to pass these issues on to the next generation.
July, 2007 to March, 2024
Seventy seven years have passed since the end of World War II.
We believe that it should not be forgotten, but the people who experienced the war are getting older and it is getting harder to hear their voices.
Under these circumstances, we thought what we could do now. And we want to take up the thoughts in this public relations brochure.
This spring 'Kitakyushu City Museum of Peace" was opened.
We produced this public relations brochure with the members of RCE Kitakyushu so that we could show people all over Japan how we have been building peace in Kitakyushu.
Activities and/or practices employed:
Six organizations in Kitakyushu shared their thoughts on war and peace in Kitakyushu with us.
Size of academic audience:
It is carried out by a project leader, 5 students, 1 city hall employee, and 2 secretariat members, and 7 groups are involved.
This newsletter will be sent to all civic centers in Kitakyushu, the RCEs in Japan, and the United Nations University, as well as to the members of Kitakyushu ESD Council. The latest ones were also distributed to some elementary and junior high schools in Kitakyushu because it is important to convey the citizens’ feeling about war and peace to them. The newsletter filled with a lot of citizens’ thoughts have been published.
Lessons learned:
One of the students who worked on this public relations magazine together is from outside Kitakyushu.
The students learned that there had been air raids in the city where their university was in the past, and that there are people who could tell the story of that time to them.
By continuing this activity, the students will acquire the ability to listen and summarize sentences. These experience must increase the students’ empirical value.
Key messages:
Some of the students said that they had started thinking what they should do from now on through participating in this project and listening to various experiences and stories,
