AFRICA & MIDDLE EAST
Country:
Nigeria
Overview
Date of RCE acknowledgement:
November, 2011
Description of RCE and Geographic Region:

RCE Minna is located in the metropolitan city of Minna, the state capital of Niger State. Niger State is one of the 36 States of Nigeria, located in the central northern region of the country. The sphere of influence of the RCE covers the entire Niger state and adjoining areas contagious to it, such as the Federal Capital of Nigeria, Abuja.

RCE Minna is located in a largely rural and agrarian region with low population density and a varying climactic regime. The economic structure, as with the rest of Nigeria, is tilted in favour of the elite educated class that determines access to resources in the formal sector. Major challenges in the region include unemployment, poverty, environmental degradation, poor sanitation and waste management systems, poor soil management, poor education, flooding, deforestation and declining freshwater resources.

Goals and Objectives:

Vision:
A population educated in and aware of the importance of Sustainable Development and how we as humans can contribute to a sustainable and holistically wealthier society for all. To contribute efforts in formal and informal sectors towards promoting Education for sustainable development.

RCE Mission:
To educate the people  within the sphere of influence of the RCE to become the vanguards for the entrenchment of sustainability in human actions at the individual and collective levels and to ensure constant exchange of ideas and best practice between both the formal and informal set up of the society.

Short-Term Objectives:

  1. To develop, collate and adapt teaching and learning resources on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) for implementation in both formal and non-formal (including local languages) education delivery.
  2. To make available to all major school libraries, literature, expertise and teaching/learning resources on ESD.
  3. To initiate activities that will engender collective problem-solving by bringing together school children at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels through hands-on activities at the community level.
  4. To generate the requisite awareness for the uptake of ESD as a key ingredient in school curricula and community-level development programme implementation.
  5. To solicit the early buy-in and continuous engagement of all stakeholders in the activities of the RCE.
  6. To design and deliver strategic awareness campaigns at the community level for pushing the ESD agenda in local languages.

Medium-Term Objectives:

  1. To train resource persons who can deliver ESD materials and act as agents of change in the community.
  2. To make ESD an ongoing activity in the RCE by ensuring that State radio and television stations and other Mass media outlets have regular programmes on ESD.
  3. To generate and implement an annual calendar of programmes, events and activities (including teaching sessions with audiovisual aids, expeditions, town hall meetings, participatory resource mapping and monitoring etc) in educational institutions and in the communities (Wards) as rallying points for ESD within the schools and surrounding communities.
  4. To institute research and outreach programmes that engages the communities in problem identification, prioritisation and solving

Long-Term Objectives:

  1. To ensure that ESD becomes the reference for the design and implementation of School curricula and community development efforts in the region.
  2. To gradually extend the operations of RCE Minna beyond its area of influence.
