Description of RCE and Geographic Region:

RCE Mutare is working to ensure people of all ages and from all walks of life participate equally in education for sustainable development in order to effect a change to more sustainable ways both individually and collectively, in respect of peace and in the name of “hunhu.” The RCE acts as a centre for leadership in networking on sustainability education, research, and development of sustainability education teaching aides and materials in order to change current education and training systems to be responsive to sustainable development issues and adopt ways of living that are sustainable. The RCE is located in the City of Mutare, the capital city of Manicaland Province which is the most populous of the ten provinces of Zimbabwe. Major health issues are HIV/AIDS and recently cholera. At least one cholera outbreak was reported in the city in 2010, which raised concerns about the need for improved hygiene and waste collection and sanitation services. Energy sources in the region are still largely unsustainable. Coupled with the unreliable electricity supply, poverty has led to massive deforestation of the mountains surrounding the city particularly the mountains adjacent to high density suburbs. One legacy of the colonial era is the division of the city’s residential areas into three categories: low density, medium density and high density. The high density suburbs are characterized by poor housing, abject poverty, and over-crowding.

RCE Mutare is currently working to:

  • Break isolation by establishing partnerships that will form a learning community of practice, bringing people with different expertise together to share experiences on sustainability education;
  • Develop learning support materials on education for sustainable development for adoption and use by learning institutions at all levels, primary, secondary and tertiary levels including at the teacher training level;
  • Engage in research that focuses on Education for Sustainable Development in order to strengthen ESD curricula and environmental learning;
  • Support learning programmes that widen understanding of the complexity and functioning of ecosystems and the impact of human actions on them, and biodiversity conservation;
  • Raise public awareness on sustainable development and to encourage a multi-stakeholder participation; and
  • Assist education institutions to incorporate ESD in their curriculum.
