The RCE Hamburg network is an open partnership. That means the partners are free to make their own decisions concerning projects and activities as long as their work contribute to the overarching goal ESD. In several cooperation groups we develop and implement projects. The responsibility of each partner may vary according to the project programme and structure.

9. Educational activities :
Mainly within projects educational activities are developed (find more information in Form 1 in the area of Flagship projects and in Form 3 on a single project). In general the learning content deals with sustainability issues of future technology or modern learning methods are applied or the mindset for taking responsibility and quality. But apart from that people get informed about SD issues at various events. For example, the Research and Transfer Centre “Applications of Life Sciences” of the HAW Hamburg organized the international summer course on Sustainability, River Basin Management and Climate Change in the Baltic Sea Region in the years 2008, 2009 and 2010. In 2010 50 participants from Baltic States like Russia, Belarus, Poland and Sweden got to know actual facts about the central topics of the 3-day-course "Sustainability", "River Basin Management" and "Climate Change". Like in the years before the participants enjoyed a varied programme consisting of lectures, intercultural group work and an excursion to the River Elbe. This course was held in September 2011 for the 4th time. Another example is the Interdisciplinary Learning Workshop on Passive House Technology that was implemented in cooperation of Hamburg University of Technology (TUUH) and Vocational Training Centre for building crafts (AZB) in September 2010. This training course emphasised the coherencies between both the different strands of technology as well as the professionals involved. So the participants learned a better joint working and their role in a wider context that is important for (E)SD. We plan to run this training again. This was an activity within the project Build with CaRe (www.buildwithcare.eu) Furthermore various actions around the following topics: Living with the tide and climate change at the riverside: Biodiversity and water as resource and living space facing climate change; Sustainable economic activities showcased through cultivating willow trees in protected areas; Create your own Green Classroom using renewable raw materials (for pupils, teachers and individuals facilitated by Heike Markus-Michalczyk, member of jury of International Agenda-21-Schools in Hamburg) Academic ESD activities can also be reported by LEUPHANA University: Seminars range from Theoretical Foundations of Sustainable Communication for undergraduate students to Participatice Governance ans Sustainable Development for MSc Sustainability Sciences students. (www.leuphana.de/institute/infu/unesco-chair/chair-activities/academic-activities.html)
10. Competences and capabilities :
Knowledge about future technology such as renewable energy and sustainable building can be gained. Specific skills in construction and communication are trained. The relationship to the participants' jobs is a big issues for us. Mostly, transferable knowledge and skills as well as system thinking is trained. HAW Hamburg is a partner of the “acqua alta 2011 - Exhibition and International Conference on Climate Impact, Flood Protection and Hydraulic Engineering”. Consequences of climate change for flood protection was at the focus of acqua alta fair and conference in October 2011. This unique event was a meeting place for decision makers from industry, science and government to discuss effective strategies for the future. For more information please visit the acqua alta homepage: http://acqua-alta.de/en/conference/ Parallel to the acqua alta the HAW Hamburg SKINT team organized the seminar ‘International Water Law’ for water managers. The workshop held in October 2011 offered valuable insights in and information about the main features of European water law. Experts presented the latest legal development and discuss a wide range of issues related to European Water Legislation and its implementation. SKINT partners from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands also introduced their achievements. More information about the ‘International Water Law’ seminar on the SKINT website http://www.skint-hamburg.de/.
