RCE Okayama (Japan) and the ESD Okayama Award Steering Committee are pleased to announce that the ESD Okayama Award 2022 is now open for entries.

The Award rewards outstanding ESD practices in local communities around the world to support organisations carrying out ESD activities and to promote ESD to local communities globally through showcasing their initiatives.

Eligibility: Organisations based in any country implementing ESD activities in local communities are eligible.
Number of Award-Winning Projects: Up to two projects
Prize: US $3,000 per project
Deadline for Application: 15 July 2022, 17:00 (Japanese Standard Time)
Award Ceremony: The scheduled date is 19 November, 2022. One representative of the winning project(s) will be invited to the Ceremony in Okayama, Japan to give a presentation. It has not been decided whether this will be held in-person or online.

Call for Nominations: 2021-2022 UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development

The call for nominations of the seventh edition of the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development is now open. Funded by the Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Distinguished Academic Performance, the Prize is awarded every two years and recognises innovative practices that contribute to enhancing the quality of teaching and learning around the world.  

Details: 

  • The Prize of US $300,000 will be divided between three winners. Candidates should be institutions, organisations and educational or research institutes which are working to enhance the performance and effectiveness of teachers.  
  • Applications are to be submitted in English or French by 31 October, 2021 midnight (Paris time, UTC+2) via a dedicated online platform.

Call for Nominations: 2020 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICT in Education

Individuals, institutions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or other entities are invited to apply for the 2020 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the use of ICT in education. This year’s theme is “the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance the continuity and quality of learning”. The Prize will award US $25,000 each to two innovative projects leveraging new technologies to expand educational opportunities. Special attention will be given to projects that provide access to education in remote areas or aim to improve the availability and affordability of connectivity for education and learning. The deadline for submissions is 18 December, 2020 (midnight, Paris time), and the Prize will be awarded in April 2021. All projects should be nominated by a National Commission for UNESCO or an NGO in official partnership with UNESCO. Note that self-nominations will not be accepted. Call for Entries: 2020 SEAMEO-Japan ESD Award

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan (MEXT) in cooperation with the UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education are pleased to announce the 2020 SEAMEO-Japan Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Award, with the theme ‘Addressing Plastic Problems for Transforming Communities’. The objectives of the award are:

  • To raise awareness of ESD in schools and communities across Southeast Asia;
  • To promote ESD best practices in schools and communities across Southeast Asia; 
  • To share and exchange knowledge and best practices on ESD in schools across Southeast Asia and Japan;
  • To encourage networking among schools and communities which implement ESD practices in Southeast Asian countries and Japan; and        
  • To support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.   

All public and private kindergarten/elementary/secondary/vocational and technical schools within 11 Southeast Asian countries are eligible to apply (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam).

The school awarded 1st prize will receive USD 1,500 and a study tour to Japan, with prizes of USD 1,000 and USD 500 for 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. In addition, there will be a special prize of USD 1,000 from the SEAMEO Secretariat for the best programme carried out in small schools of less than 250 students. Young scientists from all over the world who are contributing to sustainability research are invited to apply to the Green Talents Competition 2020 (hosted by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)), outlining their approach to making our societies more sustainable. The competition provides applicants with the opportunity to showcase their research to the broader public, exchange with outstanding experts, and lay the foundation for long-lasting collaborations with German research institutions. The award is open to all disciplines, with entries accepted until 19 May, 2020. Nominations open for The MIDORI Prize for Biodiversity 2020

The MIDORI Prize, a biennial international prize co-organised by the AEON Environmental Foundation and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), honours three individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

Winners of the prize will each be honoured at an award ceremony held in Tokyo, Japan on 18 September 2020, prior to the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties, and will each receive a monetary prize of US$100,000. On the same day, The AEON Environmental Foundation will hold an event to mark the 30th Anniversary of its establishment, with all past MIDORI Prize winners invited for a panel discussion.

2019-2020 Peace Pals International Art Exhibition and Awards

Peace Pals International has joined in partnership with its sister organisation, the Goi Peace Foundation of Japan, in a special art exhibition and awards for 2019/2020, under the theme of ‘Sports and Peace’. Youth from around the world, aged 5-16 are invited to submit their artwork, giving thought as to what peace means to them and how sports can influence peace. Submissions close on 15 February, 2020. SDGs Design International Awards 2019

These awards invite students from all over the world to use their design skills to create new, bold, and innovative solutions. Designs can be submitted for SDG 13 (designs to counter damage caused by natural disasters), SDG 14 (designs to protect the ocean’s abundance and beauty), or SDG 10 (designs for human coexistence beyond nationality, ethnicity, or age). Any genre of design is accepted, with students from any Japanese or overseas university, vocational school, or graduate school eligible to apply. The grand prize to be awarded is ¥300,000. Applications Open: The Plastic Initiative Award and the Plastic Initiative Photography Contest

The Plastic Initiative Award, developed by UNESCO Bangkok, is an opportunity for schools, universities, and other institutions to be recognised for their work related to plastic waste management. The winner will have their work presented at a Donor/Fundraising event, in addition to receiving a trophy and other prizes.

The Award will be complemented by the Plastic Initiative Photography Contest, with submitted photos to relate to the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. The winner will receive a trophy and be given a platform to publicise their projects and contributions.

Call for Nominations: Wenhui (文晖) Award for Educational Innovation 2019

Applications for nominations for the 2019 Wenhui Award are now open. The theme of this year’s award, Promoting University and School Partnerships in Advancing the Education 2030 Agenda, aims to recognise successful university-school partnerships that have contributed to quality education and lifelong learning in preparing children and youth for life, work and citizenship.

Established by the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO, and coordinated by UNESCO Bangkok, the Award is open to individuals and institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. Two individuals or institutions will be selected by a jury of distinguished educators, with the winners each to receive a Certificate of Excellence and prize money of USD 20,000.

Wege Prize, organised by Kendall College of Art and Design’s Wege Center for Sustainable Design with support from the Wege Foundation, is an annual competition that ignites game-changing solutions for the future by inspiring college/university students around the world to collaborate across institutional, disciplinary, and cultural boundaries to redesign the way economies work. Participants contend for over $30,000 (USD) in total cash prizes, all while helping to show the world what the future of problem solving looks like.

The theme of this year’s Wenhui Award is in line with the Sustainable Development Goal 4 - Education 2030 Agenda to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all, as well as UNESCO’s vision of education to provide and enhance quality learning opportunities particularly to those most disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalized.
 
Established by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Programme of Educational Innovation for Development (APEID) and the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO, the Award is open to individuals and institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. Two winners will be selected, who will each receive a Certificate of Excellence and prize money of US $20,000.
