Ecosystem(s):
Socioeconomic and environmental characteristics of the area :
Curitiba is the capita of the State of Paraná. There are 3,600,000 inhabitants living in the metropolitan area of area of 15,913.24 sqr-km and density 227.17 inhab./sqr-km. The area HDI is 0.783, considered to be high for Brazil. The GDP is nearly
R$ 135 billions and a GDP per capita R$ 38,995.77. The urban bus system a reference worldwide (BRT) but with the equivocated policy for expansion of urban fleet the traffic conditions have deteriorated and vehicular emissions have substantially increased. The project CICLOVIDA has been pushing the agenda for lower private vehicles and the integration of cycle-mobility alternatives.
Description of sustainable development challenge(s) in the area the project addresses:
As far as mobility goes, the challenge is to provide reliable and affordable alternatives for the population in the present time and for the future. The mix and integration of mobility alternatives will dramatically improve the quality of life, inclusion and economic productivity for the region. Curitiba, as Brazil in general, has relied on combustion engine vehicles (bus, cars) for decades and the degradation of the urban space, the travel time and air quality, bus fare are major issues.

Rationale:
The central idea of the Phase I of the project was to turn the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), in partnership with the Technological Federal University of Paraná (UTFPR), a diffusion core of a culture of more sustainable and healthy urban mobility with the emphasis in the use of bicycles. There were and there are many initiatives in place with inter and multi-disciplinary approach. They all consider evidence-based recommendations, demonstration, seminars, lectures, art and culture events and productions, in order to promote the "culture of the cyclo-mobility". Along the 8 years (+5 years non-officially) of the phase I of the project, we established and reference center for the variety of actions that now continues in phase II until 2024.
Objectives:
The main goals are to promote the "culture of cyclo-mobility" across the internal community by establishing a strong core for similar actions, mobility modal challenges, visual and multimedia production, web site, publications, national and international events, simulator to the Campus community and the external community.

Lessons learned:
In our modest assessment the project has been successful since its start in 2003 because we have a very competent leadership (Mr. Carlos Belotto, a staff member of UFPR) and we welcomed anyone truly interested in promoting cyclomobility, either from inside the academia or outside. We have held periodical meetings that valued the participation and contribution of everyone. We did not associate with political parties and promoted diversity of thoughts. The challenge is to keep a large team motivated and integrated, to keep the work inter and multidisciplinary and document the work. We have full institutional support from UFPR administration, financial resources were always scarce, but we had good team.
Key messages:
" Culture of more sustainable and healthy urban mobility" Curitiba's street artist Plá composed a tune https://youtu.be/lfT_rQHioAM?t=130 and always participate in our events. "Pra andar de bicicleta tem que ter moral", or "To ride a bike must have guts" in a loose translation of the street expression.
Relationship to other RCE activities:
We have held international meetings (e.g., World Bicycle Forum https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Bike_Forum, World RCE 2010 and RCE America 2016) and exchanged experiences and prospect on currently basis with some RCE-Americas. http://www.curitiba.pr.gov.br/tv/prefeito-participa- do-desafio-intermodal/3125
Funding:
UFPR, UTFPR funds “modal challenge”, students, printed matter, travel expenses, and support for meetings and seminars.
