5. Project description
Provide a short description of the project including strategies, regional challenges, aims and specific project activities.:

The project involves constructing hydraulic water pumps from scrap metals. RCE Greater Nairobi area of operation has challenges of encroachment of riparian land and wetlands, food insecurity and emission of greenhouse gases from petroleum fuels. The project aims to pump water to land areas at higher levels for domestic use and sustainable agriculture. This has contributed towards the conservation of riparian land where farmers are changing from their traditional farming practices along the rivers and engaging in sustainable agriculture on upper lands. The project is also addressing climate change in that the pump does not use any fuel, and hence no emission of greenhouse gases and at the same time there is restoration of forest cover along the riparian land. The project is addressing the issue of food security and alleviation of hunger in the region where farmers are cultivating on larger land areas on the uplands compared to the former small fields along the river. The hydraulic pumps are also supplying clean water for domestic use to the communities and institutions.
