Description of RCE and Geographic Region:

RCE Kano is based in Kano State in the North West Nigeria, the leading RCE Kano among the four RCEs in Nigeria covers seven States which include Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kebbi States with a combined population of 41.8 million people. The RCE also has five other organizations and its collaborators, Bayero University Kano, some traditional rulers, Emirate Councils, and traditional some institutions. The RCE also has collaborations with NGOs and CBOs from other states in northern Nigeria.

Goals and Objectives:

Vision:
RCE Kano is to contribute for sustainable inclusive communities through learning in education for sustainability and transform a fractured traditional form of education that will be functional and sustainable for all.

Objectives:

  • ESD programmes are tailored to address issues and the local context of the community in which they operate;
  • Increase access to quality education that is most needed in the regional context;
  • Deliver trainers’ training programmes and develop methodologies and learning materials;
  • Lead advocacy and awareness-raising efforts in the public about the importance of educators and the essential role of ESD in achieving a sustainable future. RCEs promote the long-term goals of ESD, such as environmental stewardship, social justice, and improvement of the quality of life.

Activities
Current Activities:

Climate Change and Environmental Change Risk Management
The school of Legal and general studies Katsina, in collaboration with the RCE, organized a climate change mitigation and environmental change risk management to convert desert encroachment. Shelterbelt was created with about 2,500 planted trees. A Botanical Garden was also designed and economic trees were planted therein. The shelterbelt was extended to the community through the community engagement committee and plans are under way to involve other communities.

Out of School African Children Education Project OSACEP/One Child Per Bag Project (OCBP)
RCE Kano in collaboration with CREACC have so far supported and help enrolled over 2,000 out of school children across Nigeria, children from broken homes, those living in destitute conditions, orphans and children whose parents cannot afford to send them to schools at primary level in 2016, by providing them with uniforms, school bags, books, pencils, and erasers.

Classroom to Classroom Climate Change Campaign (5CS)
The Centre in collaboration with RCE Kano go from primary schools to secondary schools campaigning on climate change and its effect. We move from one classroom to another to sensitize children on the dangers of climate change and SDGs. We partnered with 7 countries under Global Climate Ambassadors in Denmark see more here

Economic Trees for the Sahara Sahel Initiative ET4SSI
The Centre in collaboration with RCE Kano also initiated the One Million Economic Tree Plantation for the Sahel Initiative is meant to plant 1 million trees from now to 2018 alone.

Expanding Access to Girls' Learning in Education for Sustainability (EAGLES)
Similar to other RCE Kano program, The CREACC in close collaboration with RCE Kano also teaches young girls how to make shoes, necklaces, local ceilings, and belts. This initiative is in line with the Women Empowerment Program.

Achievements:

RCE Kano Skill Acquisition Program
Sixty three trainees were graduated from different fields of vocational training. The breakdown is as follows: Leather works 11, shoe making 22, carpentry 17, automobile mechanic 7 and plumbing 6. This is at September 30th 2016. We expect the number to rise to 101 by the year ended 31st December 2016.

The RCE is also negotiating with the mobile phone sellers and repairers association to start training youth on mobile phone repairs.
