Transforming Together: The Values and Actions Needed to Respond to the SDGs in the United Kingdom

26 participants from six RCEs in the UK met at the University of Edinburgh on 20-21 June 2017. The event was hosted by RCE Scotland. This was the first meeting of the UK RCEs since June 2013, and was held as a follow-up to the European RCE meeting in London in 2016.

Within Lagos State there are over 1,500 primary schools run outside the set standards of government primary schools, reaching those in isolated locations, such as unreachable settlements in swamps, providing students with housing and a formal education at low costs.

Child labour has been a is one of the major challenges in North Central Nigeria and indeed in Nigeria. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), child labour deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development.

RCE Thiruvananthapuram along with Centre for innovation in science and social action (CISSA) organized a talk on ‘KNOW AFRICA- History, Development and Science’ by Prof. Mammo Muchie (Research Chair and Professor of Economics Research on Innovation at the Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa) at the Institute of Engineers, Thiruvananthapuram on 31st July, 2017.

RCE Kitakyushu and Stakeholders – a Story of Successful ESD Promotion

Several members of the Global RCE Secretariat attended a meeting with RCE Kitakyushu, its stakeholders and the Kitakyushu ESD Council, including local government officials. The meeting, held in June 2017, allowed for constructive exchange on current projects of RCE Kitakyushu and their plans in the coming year.

RCE Munich is Awarded with the Bavarian ESD Quality Seal

Once a year, institutions, networks or individuals can receive the official acknowledgement by the Bavarian State, Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection. The Award is given for outstanding work in the area of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Environmental Education.

UNU-IAS Signs Letter of Agreement with IPBES Strengthening the Collaboration in Biodiversity

On 24 July 2017, the United Nations University – Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) entered a Letter of Agreement (LoA) with the Intergovernmental Science - Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).  The LoA highlights the nature of the collaboration in all its terms and conditions.

WHO and CBD Link Biodiversity and Health with 1st Interagency Meeting

The first Interagency Liaison Group on Biodiversity and Health (ILG), jointly organized by the Secretariat of Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Health Organization (WHO) was held in Geneva on 4-5 May 2017. The core objective of the meeting was to strengthen the collaboration and policy coherence between key agencies that work at the intersection of human health and biodiversity.

The fifth Meeting of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystems Services (IPBES) Task Force on Capacity-building, was held at the Norwegian Environment Agency, in Trondheim, Norway, on 26-28 April 2017. Naoya Tsukamoto and Unnikrishnan Payyappallimana represented UNU-IAS at the meeting.
